2011 Asia Regional Conference on “Advocacy towards the Ratification and Implementation of ILO Convention 189 on Domestic Workers”

The 2011 Asia Regional Conference on “Advocacy towards the Ratification and Implementation of ILO Convention 189 on Domestic Workers” brought together again domestic workers’ unions, trade unions, civil society groups and other social movements in the Asia region to serve as catalysts for national and regional initiatives towards the ratification of the Convention for domestic workers.

The 2011 Asia Regional Conference on “Advocacy towards the Ratification and Implementation of ILO Convention 189 on Domestic Workers” aims to continue the process of advocacy and action from various regional social movements, labour, non-government organizations and trade unions in Asia. The conference intends to provide a space and opportunity to strategically plan the actions forward towards the full ratification of ILO member States on the Convention for Domestic Workers.

Specifically, the conference aims to:

  • Update on the actions and processes in the 100th ILC in Geneva last June 2011;
  • Determine the processes and stumbling blocks in the ratification of Convention 189 within the countries in Asia;
  • Identify gaps and opportunities in the existing national laws and policies on domestic work within the Asian region;
  • Plan and strategize the next steps towards the advocacy for the ratification of ILO Convention 189 and Recommendation 201 at the national levels.

The conference is organized through the Global Network in Asia, International Domestic Workers Network, International Labour Organization, International Trade Union Confederation Asia-Pacific and the Migrant Forum in Asia together with the Philippine Technical Working Group on Domestic Work, which includes the Department of Labor and Employment, the Employers’ Confederation of the Philippines, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines, the Federation of Free Workers, the Alliance of Progressive Labor, the Samahan at Ugnayan ng mga Mangagawang Pantahanan sa Pilipinas (SUMAPI) along with partners and advocates of decent work for domestic workers.
