Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Contingency Planning Workshop
Poor families and communities in the Bondoc project sites are vulnerable due to their exposure to several risks such as climate-induce hazards, armed conflict and unstable sources of income and livelihoods. Local governments and communities also need help in coping with and mitigating the negative impacts of natural disasters.
To enhance knowledge and strengthen coordination between local governments and communities on Disaster Risks Reduction and Management (DRRM), the Bondoc LED project had a four-day study tour. The study tour held on 1-4 June 2011, featured area visits and dialogue on good practices of local governments and communities on DRRM. Local governments of Albay, Sorsogon City and Legazpi City were among the learning sites as the natural landscape and hazard profile of these areas are almost similar to the vulnerability context of Bondoc Peninsula.
A total of 36 local governments and community leaders from Unisan, Catanauan, San Narciso and Mulanay and two representatives from the DRRM Provincial Council joined the study tour. Key lessons included preparing and planning ahead; integrating DRRM as an investment and not as contingency plan in governance; and getting everyone involved.
