Strengthening Public Employment Services in Nepal

The activity took place in Kathmandu from 14 to 17 March 2016 as part of the Labour Market Information and Employment Service (LIfE) Project, funded by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

KATHMANDU - The International Labour Organization and Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE), Department of Labour (DoL), Nepal jointly organized a capacity development training on employment services for the officials of Public Employment Service Centres, partner organizations and other stakeholders.

The training programme covered the major core functions of the employment services, including essential logistical elements, service needs determination, services to employers, use of occupational code, labour market mapping, reaching out to clients of employment services, managing performance, action plan and reporting. 

The participants were from 14 Employment Service Centres, officials from MoLE, DoL, Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT), Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI), Federation of Nepalese Cottage and Small Industries (FNCSI), Trade Unions, Nepal Administrative Staff Collage (NASC), Training Institute for Technical Instruction (TITI) and Microsoft Innovation Centre Nepal (MIC Nepal).

 

Ms Aabha Shrestha Karna, Joint Secretary, MoLE emphasized on importance of Employment Service Centres in the current context of Nepal to improve job matching and ultimately employment of youth and disadvantaged group. She said “Labour market is very dynamic, and labour market information systems should be able to respond and support these dynamics”. She mentioned that MoLE is supporting DoL to change the temporary structure to permanent structure of ESC based on performance. She thanked ILO and KOICA for the support in improving the quality of employment services.
