Mr Howard highlighted that in order to improve the labour market governance in Nepal, issues of employment promotion, social security, informal economy and labour migration need to be addressed. He also impressed upon the need to enact the draft labour law and social security law, which will be a milestone for Nepal to improve industrial relations and extend social security for workers.

At the meeting, Mr Howard congratulated Nepal on being elected as a Deputy Member of the ILO Governing Board for the period of 2017-2020 and emphasized that this is a unique opportunity for Nepal to share its experiences in promoting decent work for all. Nepal was elected the Deputy Member of the ILO Governing Board earlier this year at the International Labour Conference (ILC). As part of the ILC, the World of Work Summit included an address by the Right Honourable President Ms Bidhya Devi Bhandari on women in the world of work.

Mr Howard shared that the ILO is in the process of developing its Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP) for the next five years from 2018 till 2022. He expressed that this strategic plan will reflect the needs and priorities of tripartite constituents and therefore the plan envisages setting up a tripartite committee to provide strategic guidance in planning and implementation of the DWCP.

Honourable Minister Mr Mansur expressed support towards the ILO’s vision and committed to pushing for the enactment of the labour law and social security law. He further expressed that the Ministry looks forward to the ILO’s support towards implementing laws and policies, promoting employment opportunities and capacity building in the country.
