Progress report | 06 October 2016
Better Work Indonesia is one of the 5 country programmes independently reviewed by Tufts University for its effectiveness in improving garment workers’ lives and boosting factory competitiveness. The results of the Progress and Potential report show that the Better Work Programme is having a significant and important impact on working conditions. It is also clear that monitoring compliance matters and that social dialogue plays an important part in improving workers’ outcomes.

Key highlights from Better Work Indonesia

Impact assessment results from Indonesia suggest significant progress has been made, with potential for further improvement. Almost 5,000 worker surveys and 590 management surveys were completed, between 2012 and 2015, in BWI factories. Main highlights, in terms of impact, include:
  • Greater job stability for workers, with the proportion of workers who say they hold permanent contracts (as opposed to short-time contracts) doubling
  • Increased awareness by workers of their rights and willingness to take serious concerns to trade unions
  • Reduced prevalence of verbal abuse
  • Measurable effects in take-home pay
  • Improved pre-natal care

Better Work Indonesia will be releasing further analysis of the results presented by the independent impact study. The programme will also be promoting discussions and exchanges, with its key stakeholders, about the lessons learned from the study and the potential for future improvement.
