Virtual Media Training and Fellowship: Strengthening Gender Lens and Ethical Journalism on Labour Migration and Violence against Women Migrant Workers

The training and fellowship programmes aim to enhance the gender-sensitive media coverage of the women migrant workers, fighting stereotypes, prejudice and bias against women migrant worker.

The overall objective of the SAF-AJI collaboration is to enhance the gender-sensitive media coverage of the women migrant workers, fighting stereotypes, prejudice and bias against women migrant worker and prevent violence and harassment faced by women migrant workers.
  1. To organize a three days training programme and build capacity of 25 participants (media personnel) on gender sensitive reporting, code of conduct and ethics in reporting forced labour, violence, abuse and trafficking issues, communite the positive contributions of women migrant workers and to ensure accurate information and fair r portrayal of women migrant workers
  2. To share understanding of main concepts related to gender and migration, violence as well as increasing quality of the reporting of the issue of gender and migration.
  3. To convene editorial meeting with 10 Key Media Practitioners at national and local level and improve media (s) awareness on the situation of women migrant worker and gender-ethical approaches in covering and reporting stories on the labour migration, trafficking in person and gender based violence of women migrant workers
  4. To conduct on the job training and mentoring to the 10 selected journalist (s) in producing a gender sensitive and ethical reports on the current situation of women migrant worker, their positive contributions and gender-based violence against women migrant workers. The report will be produced and published.

The interventions will entail:

A three-day comprehensive Training for Journalists on Strengthening Gender Lens and Ethical Journalism on Labour Migration and Violence Against Women Migrant Workers. Prior to the Training, Safe and Fair AJI will convene an Editorial Meeting with the Editor from each national and local media in Safe and Fair’s targeted areas.

Building knowledge and skills of 25 Journalists on gender sensitive code of ethics for media. There are several key topics that will be delivered:
  • Migrant workers’ rights, including the ILO Convention on labour migration, women worker rights protection especially the C189 and C190, International Conventions on the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. The journalists will also be provided with an understanding of the protection of migrant workers as regulated in the law. No. 18 of 2017
  • Positive contribution of women migrant worker and to ensure accurate information and fair gender portrayal, shared understanding of main concepts and conventions as well as increasing quality and quantity of the reporting of the issue
  • Basic principles on gender sensitive language, lens, and ethical approaches in covering stories on the labour migration, trafficking in person and gender based violence to women migrant workers.
  • Analyze the Case Study of Women Migrant Worker as a information source in developing a brief news . As an exercise, participant will write a brief news on current situation of women migrant worker, their positive contribution and gender-based violence against women migrant workers.
On the Job Training and Mentoring Programme for Journalist(Output 3.1) Conducting on the job training and mentoring to the 10 selected journalist (s) in producing a gender sensitive and ethical report on the current situation of women migrant worker, their positive contribution and gender-based violence against women migrant workers. Reporting and publishing: all published works of selected journalists will be collected and clipped by AJI Jakarta. The coverage works will be translated into English and printed in PDF format.

Target Participants

The participants are journalists and media practitioners in national and local level, especially from Safe and Fair targeted areas: Cirebon District (West Java Province), Blitar, Tulungagung (East Java Province), East Lampung (Lampung Province) and Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara Province).
