Economic and Social Council 2015 Integration Segment - "Achieving sustainable development through employment creation and decent work for all": Indonesia country level consultation

For 2015, the Integration Segment is being organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO). It aims to bring together key stakeholders to focus on how the creation of good quality jobs could be a tool for promoting the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, and to identify policy choices and possible trade-offs that could arise from an integrated approach.

Background

The Economic and Social Council agreed that the theme for the Integration Segment of the 2015 session of the Council would be “achieving sustainable development through employment creation and decent work for all”. At almost the same time the Open Working Group for Sustainable Development Goals concluded its work and declared that “people are at the centre of sustainable development”. We currently face massive environmental, social, economic and employment challenges. Tackling these issues together in an integrated manner makes sense.

In the lead up to the global meeting, the ILO in collaboration with the UN agencies, will organise a series of country level consultations. Given Indonesia’s outstanding leadership in the promotion of sustainable development, it is a priority to consolidate lessons learned and provide policy recommendations from Indonesia through conducting a country level consultation in partnership with the stakeholders of the economy. This country level consultation will take place between the 24th and 25th of February 2015 in Jakarta.

The Indonesia country level consultation for the 2015 Integrated Segment will focus on the following priority areas:

  1. The economic transformation of the Indonesian economy and its policies to facilitate sustainable development and decent work.
  2. Promoting the expansion of prosperity while addressing rising income inequality with a neutral environmental impact.
  3. Expanding green jobs, building resilient societies and promoting more sustainable patterns of consumption and investment.
  4. Promoting jobs and protecting people at home and abroad.
  5. Building innovation and competitiveness through entrepreneurship, apprenticeships, skills development and value chain approaches.
  6. Transforming the informal economy and upgrading rural economies to enhance productivity and promote better jobs in an environmentally sustainable manner.

This forum will provide a space to build synergy among all the stakeholders of the economy to develop policy strategies and action plans in support of the creation of quality jobs that promote sustainable development. It seeks to contribute to building an integrated approach to employment policy formulation, with a strong commitment from the central and local governments, business and labour to implement employment policies that reflect the three pillars of sustainable development - economic, social and environment.

Objective

To consolidate lessons learned and provide recommendations from Indonesia on "achieving sustainable development through employment creation and decent work for all" in the lead up the meeting of the Economic and Social Council 2015 Integration Segment.
