A Series of Specialized Broadcast Events on Migrant Workers
These events aim to raise the public awareness on the protection of Indonesian migrant workers.
As part of the commemoration of the International Migrants Day, the ILO through its Combating Forced Labour and Trafficking of Indonesian Migrant Workers Project supported the Indonesian Migrant Workers Trade Union (SBMI) in organizing simultaneous interactive radio talk shows in three cities (Medan, Surabaya and Semarang) on 21 December 2009. These interactive radio talk shows were live broadcast by SmartFM Network.
As many cases of exploitation of migrant workers take place during the early stages of the migration cycle in sending communities, these talkshows, thus, aimed to discuss required protections and services at local level. During the discussions, the three talkshows concluded with the urgent need for local government offices and other stakeholders to disseminate information and provide assistance and services to migrant workers and their families, including financial services, micro-credit and trainings.
