ILO hands over OSH digital learning tools and risk assessment service for a more resilient OSH culture in Indonesia

The ILO together with its social partners showcases milestones and achievements in strengthening the occupational safety and health (OSH) management system in the country through various tools, platforms and programmes.

Applause echoed at the corridor hall of Grand Hyatt Hotel Jakarta when Muhammad Idham, Director of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Examination Development of the Ministry of Manpower, Masami Tamura, Deputy Chief of Mission from the Embassy of Japan and Michiko Miyamoto, ILO Country Director for Indonesia and Timor-Leste, cut the orange and blue ribbon celebrating the official opening of the three-day OSH exhibition on 20 September.

Witnessed by around 50 invitees from relevant ministries, business associations, workers’ and employers’ organizations, academia, OSH experts, youth organizations as well as mass media, the OSH exhibition also marked the closing and hand-over of the ILO’s Enhancing COVID-19 Prevention at and through Workplaces. The 1.6 million US dollar project, funded by the Government of Japan, came to an end after 1.5 years of implementation.

The exhibition featured milestones of the project and OSH tools and demonstrated the impact of the project’s risk assessment service and positive changes experienced by the participating companies through the implementation of resilient, strong and adaptive OSH management system.

“The knowledge sharing session and practical guides for the prevention and mitigation of COVID-19 provided by the project were very useful and comprehensive for the needs of businesses, including small- and medium-sized enterprises. This has helped the survival of my business and my ability to protect my employees’ employment,” said one of the beneficiaries, Yuni Lestari who owns Karuniasari Catering in Yogyakarta through an impact video screened at the exhibition.

The project has benefited 1,521 workplaces and 22,154 workers through a strengthened OSH management system at the enterprise level. The project has also built the OSH capacity of 1,510 people and has reached 25,532 vocational and first-year college students through its OSH learning platform. In addition, the project’s OSH campaign has resulted in 446 news articles and reached 15,218 people to converse on the issue.

In terms of the partnership, the project brought together key labour actors and other relevant ministries as well as organizations to help Indonesia move towards sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the Ministry of Manpower, the Indonesian Employers’ Association (Apindo) and trade union confederations, the partnerships have included the Indonesian Medical Association for Occupational Health (IDKI), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) as well as journalist associations.

“Together we have achieved significant results promoting business sustainability while, at the same time, ensuring the protection of workers. The achievements have contributed to the economic growth of the country. We hope that beneficiaries who have positively affected would continue to expand over the coming years to be part of Indonesia’s effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 8 on decent work, and to adopt OSH as the fundamental right at work,” said ILO Country Director Michiko Miyamoto.

To ensure sustainability, the ILO handed over an OSH online learning platform, e-OSH Learning and KATIGA board game, to the Ministry of Manpower. The e-OSH Learning is a free electronic learning site intended for vocational students and first year university students; while KATIGA game focuses on the prevention, control and protection of occupational hazards in the work environment during this pandemic.

Along with the exhibition, the project organized a series of OSH talkshows from 20-22 September. The talkshows presented various resource persons and were attended by over 200 participants.
