Timor-Leste continue to train local contractors for road rehabilitation

The training is part of the European Union funded programme “Enhancing Rural Access Agro-Forestry Project ERA”.

This third and final batch of 34 contractors’ training programme, under the ERA Agro-Forestry Project, which is to rehabilitate 16 Kilometres of rural roads in the Municipality of Lautem was launched on 29 January 2020 at Don Bosco Training Centre, Comoro Dili. Participants to the course comprising Directors, Engineers and Supervisors are undertaking 10 weeks comprehensive training in Dili from 27th January to 8th May 2020.

The Don Bosco Training Centre and Institute for Business Development Support (IADE) are the accredited training institutions providing the training. Modules taught include Construction of Rural Roads using Labour Based Methods, Pavement Construction, Maintenance, Site Training, Contracts and Business Management.

The training was launched by H.E. Andrew Jacobs, the Ambassador of the European Union, and included Ms. Michiko Miyamoto, ILO Country Office Director for Indonesia and Timor-Leste Mr. Joao Alves, the Vice-President for Infrastructure from Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Zeferino dos Santos Sequira, President of Municipal Authorities of Lautem.

H.E. Mr. Andrew Jacobs, Ambassador of the European Union to Timor-Leste expounded: “The ERA-AF has an initiative aimed at training local companies in the fields of construction, rehabilitation and management, and particularly at strengthening the entrepreneurial spirit of women as a driving force for development”.

The European Union is supporting the development of a skilled private sector that is able to service the infrastructure needs for the rural communities that are important in providing linkages to inputs and services necessary for agro-forestry development and providing connections to the market. The roads also facilitate students’ mobility and health services to the rural communities.”

ERA Agro-Forestry Project is aiming to contribute to a peaceful, inclusive and sustainable development in Timor-Leste through improved rural access, creation of employment, economic and domestic revenue opportunities through agro-forestry development, and a durable reduction in food insecurity and malnutrition in rural areas.
