Stakeholders reiterate workers’ rights

A large number of workers along with representatives of all walks of life participated in the event organized by the Government of Punjab in cooperation with workers organizations to commemorate the International Labour Day.

Children from the schools run by Workers’ Welfare Board gave colours to the ceremony. Beneficiaries of the Government’s labour welfare schemes shared how they were excelling in their lives. The daughter of a worker is following her Ph. D., under a fellowship of one of the said schemes. Mr Zahoor Awan, President, Pakistan Workers’ Federation and Ms Ingrid Christensen, Country Director, ILO were among the key speakers. Ms Christensen, while appreciating Punjab government’s efforts for labour welfare, reminded the un-finished business on social and labour protection of all workers; promotion of social dialogue and child labour survey. Raja Ashfaq Sarwar, Labour Minister Punjab, reiterated the Government’s commitment on workers’ rights; as a token he announced an increase in minimum wage in Punjab.
