The ILO, in cooperation with the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development organized a two-day National Tripartite Consultation on OSH in the mining sector. The Consultation took stock of the OSH situation in the mining sector, raised awareness on the sub optimal working conditions, mapped possible solutions for improvement and identified roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in promoting a preventive safety and health culture.

The ILO organized a series of six workshops on occupational safety and health (OSH) in different factories of Sialkot, during which 187 participants representing 41 sports goods companies/organizations from Sialkot were sensitized on OSH.
Stakeholder dialogue on Socially Responsible Enterprises and Employers Federation of Pakistan’s national business agenda

The Employers’ Federation of Pakistan (EFP) convened a stakeholders dialogue to raise awareness among stakeholders on key elements of the ILO’s Declaration on Multinational Enterprises & Social Policy. The ILO’s MNE Declaration Project, funded by the Government of Japan, supported this initiative of the EFP. Relevant stakeholders from the world of work, discoursed at length, focusing on the opportunities & challenges concerning occupational, safety & health and women engagement in the workforce.

The Government of Punjab in collaboration with Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP) and ILO held a Provincial Consultative workshop on the “Youth Employment Framework”. This is part of a series of consultations across the country aimed at devising consensus based strategies for youth employment and empowerment.

The ILO is embarking on a project funded by the European Union on ‘Fair Recruitment practices’ - “Global Action to Improve the Recruitment Framework of Labour Migration or REFRAME. In this regard, a national consultation was held in Islamabad on 11th October 2017 to identify the challenges and priorities for action and implementation modalities of this new project

With the technical support of the ILO, the Directorate General of Labour Welfare Balochistan (DGLW) convened a technical consultation/ social dialogue meeting with tripartite plus stakeholders to gather on the draft labour laws of Baluchistan. This is part of the ongoing legislative development process following devolution in 2010.

The ninth cohort of the National Labour Inspectors’ Training Program took place in Muzaffarabad from 19-21 October, 2017 for the labour inspection staff from AJK, ICT and GB . This training was organised under the Dutch funded project on Strengthening Labour Inspection in Pakistan (SLISP).

ILO supported the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Prime Ministers’ Youth Programme in organizing a consultative workshop on Youth Employment Framework. The event took place on 29th August 2017 at Pearl Continental Hotel Peshawar. Stakeholders emphasized the need for developing Provincial Youth Employment Strategy for KP under the National Youth Employment Framework. The youth from KP and FATA discussed their challenges and opportunities regarding Employment. ILO is looking to provide support in organizing such consultations in other provinces and regions.

All Pakistan Labour Federation (APLF) during a worker's seminar arranged in Quetta with the technical support of ILO's EU funded Project on Sustaining GSP Plus in Pakistan highlighted the importance of increased trade unionism, collective bargaining and occupational safety and health for promoting decent work and thus industrial peace in the perspective of GSP Plus and international competitiveness of the country.

During the National Labour Law Symposium held from 19-20 July, participants stressed the need to strengthen social dialogue for the implementation of the core labour standards ratified by Pakistan. Participants prioritized social dialogue as a means of achieving inclusive and sustainable economic growth and decent work in Pakistan. The National Labour Law Symposium was organized by the ILO, Continuing Legal Education Institute of Pakistan (CLEIP), US Department of Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP-USA) and USAID.

A national consultation was organised at ILO Country Office for Pakistan in Islamabad to provide to the statutory institutions an opportunity to discuss the potential of enhancing use of technology in the labour inspection. The envisaged advantages of introducing technology in labour inspection include improvement of inspection, data collection and reporting mechanisms thereby enhancing the outreach and quality of labour inspection.

On the 15th Anniversary of the World Day against Child Labour (WDACL), The ILO Pakistan Office, in collaboration with its tripartite constituents, UN and the Civil Society Organizations, is engaging in focused activities to raise awareness on elimination of child labour so that to reiterate its commitment towards a society, free of child labour and child abuse.

Tri-partite consultation workshop on improving the compliance and reporting of core labour standards

The ILO in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development and with the financial assistance of the European Union organized a tri-partite plus workshop for the Provincial Tripartite Consultative Committees of Baluchistan and Sindh provinces. The workshop fostered greater understanding of core international labour standards and has helped in evolving a national action plan to strengthen the compliance and reporting of these standards.

ILO supported the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and HRD in organizing a two-day National Tripartite Consultation on ‘Labour Legislation in Post-Devolution Scenario’ on 17-18 January 2017 in Islamabad. It was the first opportunity for all Federal and Provincial Tripartite Consultative Committee members to jointly review progress on Labour Legislation and discuss actions for each Province/State/Region. Consultation was part of the ILO’s new project ‘Promoting International Labour & Environmental Standards in Pakistani SMEs (ILES)’ – funded by EU.
