It discusses the economic integration process of ASEAN, issues related to the social dimension of integration generally and makes some preliminary observations on the social dimension of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement. Readers are reminded that this is a work in progress that will be supplemented by country studies currently underway in the region.

  5. Reports on the Knowledge Network Meetings

    The Secretariat of the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Gloablization collaborated with outside experts on papers that collected and interpreted facts and perceptions relating to the social dimension of globalization. It established "knowledge networks" involving the authors of these papers as well as other experts, including those in the multilateral system. Practitioners and experts from national and international spheres were invited to respond to questions and to contribute policy proposals and ideas for the topics under consideration through electronic exchanges or workshops. This is the final report of those knowledge networks.

  6. Growth, inequality and poverty

    This book contains a selection of papers presented at a UNU/WIDER conference on growth and poverty in May 2001. The purpose of the conference was to review current thinking on the topic, to seek and encourage fresh research and to bring researchers from different backgrounds together to discuss whether the relation between growth, poverty and inequality can be put into a sharper perspective for policy-making.

    The Philippines, with the encouragement of government and workers' and employers' organizations, was one of the first countries to participate in a pilot programme on decent work. The three year action programme pursued the objective of supporting national efforts to reduce poverty through the implementation of policies and programmes that promotes full, decent and productive employment of Filipino workers.
