Meeting document | 14 November 2008
The meeting in Oslo on 4 September 2008 on Globalisation Decent Work and Gender, which was a side-event to the Oslo Conference on Decent Work A key to Social Justice for a Fair Globalisation on 5 September, tackled the gender equality issues associated with two aspects of globalization: global supply chains and international migration of care services workers. The ILO was asked by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which sponsored the event, to prepare a discussion paper for the meeting.

Ms Jane Hodges, Chief of the Bureau for Gender Equality, highlighted issues from ILO’s perspective, drawing from the ILO paper for the meeting and the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization. Other panellists elaborated and gave concrete examples of challenges and responses. Open discussion questions centred on women’s migration for work; employment arrangements and groups of workers outside of legal frameworks; national regulatory mechanisms and enforcement of rights (linking to the 50th anniversary of Convention No.111 and the 2008 Declaration on Social Justice and a Fair Globalization); and the need for better coordination among State actions, and replication of successful private initiatives.
