2. Population censuses conducted since 1945 (years):

1948, 1953, 1961, 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2002.   A pilot population census was carried out on 31 March 1998.  The present description relates to the 2002 population census, which was conducted from 1 to 15 April 2002. The reference day was 31 March.

3. Coverage of the census:

Whole country.

(b) Persons covered:

All persons of all ages.

4. Reference period:

The reference day: 31 March 2002.

 

The concept of current activity status was applied according to the Recommendations for the 2000 Censuses of population and housing in the ECE region.

Re (a): The age is defined in terms of year of birth.

Re (h): The census also collected information on frequency, time spent (in minutes) and means of transport used to travel to the workplace.  Also data on the workplace were collected.

6. Concepts and definitions:

(a) Economically active population:

It comprises all persons aged 15 and over who, on the census day, were either employed or unemployed, according to the definitions given below.  All members of the armed forces are included in the definition.

(b) Employment:

Considered as employed are all persons who, at the time of the census, performed a profession and received payment in money or in kind for their work.  In agricultural households are included those family members who help out and agricultural housewives if they are involved predominantly with agricultural work.  Working students with a part-time job are excluded from the definition.

It is reported that the following special categories are included:

i)                persons doing unpaid work in a family firm or business;

ii)              persons engaged in the production of goods for own consumption;

iii)            employed persons, temporarily absent from work;

iv)             seasonal workers not at work during the off-season;

v)               regular members of the armed forces;

vi)             conscripts on military/civilian service;

vii)           apprentices and trainees;

viii)         persons temporarily laid-off (with formal job attachment).

 

Only persons belonging to categories (i) and (vi) can be identified separately.

(c) Unemployment:

Considered as unemployed are all persons who were registered at employment agencies as first employment or new employment seekers at the time of the census. Students seeking work are excluded from the definition. It is reported that future starts and persons temporarily laid-off (without formal job attachment) are included in the definition.

7. Classifications used:

Both employed and unemployed persons are classified by educational level.  Only employed persons are classified by occupation, industry and by status in employment.

(a) Industry:

The Standard Classification of Activities which corresponds to NACE Rev.1 was used for coding branch of economic activity.


(b) Occupation:

The Standard Classification of Occupation which corresponds to ISCO-88 was used for coding occupation.

(c) Status in employment:

It is possible to classify the employed population as follows according to the Recommendations for the 2000 Censuses of population and housing in the ECE region: employees; employers; owner-managers of incorporated enterprises; own-account workers; contributing family members.

(d) Level of education:

For coding educational level, 16 levels of the national classification were used.  Correspondence with ISCED-97 is established at the two digit level.

8. Main differences compared with the previous census:

The most important difference between the 1991 Census and 2002 Census is the use of internationally comparable definitions and classifications that are proposed in the Recommendations for the 2000 Censuses of population and housing in the ECE region.

 

9. Publication of the census results:

In 2001 the publication ACensuses in Slovenia 1948-1991 and Census 2002" was issued.
