The definition of total population differs between the 1991 and the 2001 census: in 1991 total population was based on permanent residence, whereas in 2001 it is based on usual residence.

Persons who have interrupted employment due to military service, imprisonment, penal measures, etc. are considered inactive in the 2001 census, but in 1991 they were considered economically active (employed).

The National Classification of Economic Activities (NKD), which is in complete accordance with NACE-rev.1, has been used for coding industry in the 2001 census whereas the national classification (JKD), with links to ISIC-rev.2 at the major group level, was used in 1991.

The National Classification of Occupations (NKZ), which is in complete accordance with ISCO-88, has been used for coding occupation in the 2001 census whereas the national classification (JKZ), with links to ISCO-68 at the unit group level, was used in 1991.
