Employment:

Persons who worked for pay or profit or family gain in cash or in kind during the reference period, or who had a job or own enterprise from which they were absent due to illness or injury, vacation, maternity leave, education leave, labour management dispute, bad weather, mechanical breakdowns, etc. Persons temporarily laid off without pay are included but those on indefinite lay off are excluded. Probes were carried out to include marginal activities, most of which are intended for family consumption, such as work on the farm, fishing, repair activities, collection of firewood and manufacturing of baskets and clothes.

Unemployment:

Persons who were not in employment but were available for work or preparing to start own work during the reference period. Included are persons who had made arrangements to start a new job on a date subsequent to the reference period, as well as fulltime students who were available for work. Persons seeking work during the reference period can be separately identified.
