“Youth with Cultural Heritage and Tourism Development” Day

This event aims to create an opportunity for local youth in Thua Thien Hue Province to better understand the values of their culture heritages, and give them sufficient knowledge on how to preserve these treasures, in line with accelerating local tourism business in a sustainable manner and introducing decent career choices and professional skills associated with this sector.

Background

Being an ancient capital of Viet Nam during Nguyen Dynasty, Thua Thien Hue Province has an extensive complex of imperial tombs and temples which are historical attractive destinations. In fact, the most famous destination of the province currently is the Ancient Citadel which is a UNESCO-recognized World Culture Heritage. With its great assets in history and culture, Thua Thue Hue province tourism had a good growth with very positive results. If the rate of increasing rooms and employing labour is more than 10% according to the provincial statistics, more young people, including those from the large rural area of the province, will have opportunities to have a job in the industry. The rapid growth of the industry will also create local economic opportunities that, with proper guidance and training, will foster rural entrepreneurship and productive self-employment among young people.

However, in order to get benefits from the valuable heritages and at the same time preserve them for a safer future with sustainable jobs and income through tourism development, young people need to be equipped with active participation, motivation, cultural awareness and knowledge, self-confidence, social integration skills and individual competences.

In addition to equip local youth with sufficent and neccessary knowledge on tourism and its related vocational skills, the event also provides a forum for local enterprises to glimpse of their role in the development of local tourism sector, as well as their benefits when linking business with vocational training and promotion of decent work and rural entrepreneurship among rural young people.

The linkage between local communities, vocational training institutions and tourism enterprises can also be improved through this important event by creating a dialogue among Government agencies – Vocational institutions – Business – young people. Discussions are expected to touch on labor supply – demand related issues in the tourism sector.

Objectives

  • to improve visibility and image of ILO projects on rural youth employment, sustainable tourism skills for trade in Thua Thien-Hue
  • to create a forum for local students and rural young people, vocational schools and tourism businesses to meet and exchange information, which will be served as a foundation for future collaboration mechanism in demand-driven training, career guidance and rural entrepreneurship development activities.
