HANOI (ILO News) – ILO Viet Nam Director Chang-Hee Lee joined prominent guests to attend the high-level event celebrating 90 years of Viet Nam’s trade union in Hanoi on 28 July.

90 years ago, on 28 July 1929, the Northern Red Union, which is now the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL), was established at No 15 Hang Non Street in Ha Noi with Nguyen Duc Canh as its first leader.

Attending the celebration event was Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, many politburo members and other high-level leaders of the Party and the Government.

The organization received the Ho Chi Minh Order, the second highest decoration of the Viet Nam’s State, for its proud history and contribution to the fight for the country’s independence and workers’ rights.

VGCL has now nearly 10.5 million members across the country. It is one of the four tripartite partners of the ILO in Viet Nam, alongside with the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Viet Nam Cooperatives Alliance.

The year 2019 does not only witnesses 90 years of VGCL but also 100 years of the ILO.
