    This training guidebook can be introduced into national teaching institutions that would serve as regional-hubs supported by ILO and GAIN trainers. Ideally, over time 2 Introduction institutions would formalize such training in national curricula or as an elective in a university programme. It could become an economics course or elective for bachelor- or masters-level students.

  4. Skills mismatch in Europe: Statistics brief

    This Statistics Brief analyzes the incidence of overeducation and undereducation (skills mismatch) in a sample of European economies. Mismatch patterns are shown to depend strongly on the measure of mismatch that is adopted, but overeducation is increasing and undereducation is decreasing on at least one measure in at least half of the countries for which such trends can be assessed. Differences in skills mismatch risk between age groups and sexes are discussed, and country-specific trends are identified.

  5. The Taqeem Fund: Results-based monitoring and evaluation for youth employment in the MENA region: Public-Private Partnership

    To support youth employment initiatives and improving the effectiveness of their programs, the ILO initiated work on results-based monitoring and evaluation. This new public-private partnership (PPP) supports a select group of small and medium-sized youth employment organizations from the Middle East and North Africa region to develop strategies and provide evidence of their impact, through cost-effective and mass-market technology-based tools. The results are promoted to a broader community of policymakers, practitioners and funders. The Taqeem (wich means “evaluation” in Arabic) Community of Practice (CoP) is a group of fifteen youth employment organizations pioneering new approaches to build capacity in the MENA region to measure and monitor the impact of national programmes.

  8. Global Employment Trends for Youth, August 2010

    The report presents the latest global and regional labour market trends for youth and specifically explores how the global economic crisis has exposed the vulnerabilities of young people around the world. In developed economies, the crisis has led to the highest youth unemployment rates on record, while in developing economies – where 90 per cent of the world’s youth live – the crisis threatens to exacerbates the challenges of rampant decent work deficits, adding to the number of young people who find themselves stuck in working poverty and thus prolonging the cycle of working poverty through at least another generation.

Employment will be a challenge in 2009. As ILO Director-General, Juan Somavia stated, "The ILO's message is realistic, not alarmist" with respect to this situation.

    The report emphasizes that today's youth face serious vulnerabilities in the world of work and warns that a lack of decent work, if experienced at an early age, may permanently compromise their future employment prospects. The report adds urgency to the UN call for development of strategies aimed at giving young people a chance to maximize their productive potential through decent employment.
