Collection and Use of Labour Inspection Statistics - A short guide

This guide is intended to introduce governments, in particular ministries of labour and labour inspectorates, the importance of labour inspection statistics and benefits that can be derived from them. The guide presents, in a user-friendly manner, practical advice about labour inspection information and statistics. It details why these statistics are useful and ways in which they can increase the efficiency of inspectorates; what areas they should cover; and how they can be produced, interpreted and presented to stakeholders.

This third annual report on progress and perspectives of the ILO in Latin America and the Caribbean, prepared by the ILO Regional Office, is a continuation of the ones published in June 2012 and June 2013. Taken together, the three documents show steady, if uneven, progress in labour market policies, programmes and institutions, and that the ILO has been adjusting their strategies to focus on the key challenges faced by the region.

The Report, describing progress made in the world of work in the region over the last year and, at the same time, once again presenting strategic guidelines for discussion. The document also describes a chequered period: sustained progress has been made in labour policies and indicators, which is good news for the region. The international context presents serious threats however, and internal inequality persists, so it would be unwise to lower the guard.

This practical guide has been prepared to help member States to establish and improve their national systems for recording and notification of occupational diseases. It is aimed at relevant people in the responsible authorities, such as the ministries of labour, health, and social security; at those in occupational safety and health inspection, occupational safety and health services, national social security institutions, and compensation boards; and at employers, workers and their organizations. It also includes practical and detailed guidance on compiling and analyzing data collected through national disease surveillance systems.
