Despite recent, significant strides made by the Jordanian government to clamp down on exploitation at the workplace, more needs to be done to enhance the rights of migrant workers - not just in Jordan but worldwide.

That's among the key findings of a new report on migration released by ILO Director-General Guy Ryder at the opening session of the 103rd International Labour Conference in Geneva (28 May - 12 June 2014). The report also found that South-South migration is on the rise.

Government, employers and workers share their insights for a more balanced view of migration. The film is produced by the ILO Decent Work across Borders: A Pilot project for Migrant Health Professionals and Skilled Workers, with funding support from the European Union and in partnership with the Asia Pacific Film Institute.

    In response to the Syrian refugee crisis in Jordan, the ILO has identified child labour as a priority issue. Already, the Jordanian Government says that child labour has doubled nationwide - to 60,000 - since the refugee influx began in 2011.

  2. Syrian Child Labour in Jordan

    The ILO response plan to the Syrian refugee crisis in Jordan has identified child labour as a priority. It is estimated there are currently over 580,000 registered Syrian refugees living in Jordan. While around 160,000 refugees live in designated camps, the remaining refugee population has found shelter in host communities in rural and urban areas across Jordan. Many Syrian children are at risk of falling into the trap of child labour - particularly its worst forms. Already, the Jordanian Government says that child labour has doubled nationwide - to 60,000 - since the refugee influx began in 2011.

    The number of people migrating has risen from 154 million in 1990 to 232 million in 2013, and for many years migrants have made up about three per cent of the world’s population. Today there are more migrants than ever because of the growing world population.
