4.1 billion individuals worldwide have no access to social protection. This includes millions of migrant workers, refugees, and their families. They face legal and practical challenges to access social protection. Many options exist to secure and maintain social security rights across borders and address the protection gaps, inequalities and discrimination evidenced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of people migrating has risen from 154 million in 1990 to 232 million in 2013, and for many years migrants have made up about three per cent of the world’s population. Today there are more migrants than ever because of the growing world population.

German Companies Sign Up Against Discrimination at Work

In Germany and other countries across Europe, companies are signing "Diversity Charters" to show their commitment to promote open-minded, inclusive work environments. For engineer Ljiljana Stamenkovic born in former Yugoslavia, this has meant new opportunities to work and help other women like her, at a women's computer centre in Berlin. According to the ILO's Global Report on Discrimination, migrant workers like Ljiljana are at a higher risk for discrimination when competing for jobs especially in times of economic and social crisis.
