Arid climate conditions and extreme weather events only exacerbate the problems of local development. The Eco Manyatta project enhances the living standards of these pastoral communities through green jobs creation in the construction of eco-friendly manyattas.

    The ILO Youth Entrepreneurship Facility (YEF) programme, which aims to create job opportunities for young people in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, organized a three-day regional knowledge sharing workshop for key project partners, stakeholders and beneficiaries on 9-11 September 2013 in Nairobi, Kenya.

    Green entrepreneurship on the rise in Kenya

    19 March 2013

    Launched in November 2012 through the ILO-YEF partnership, this annual Business Plan Competition in Kenya attracted 183 entries spread across 4 categories. The overall winner, Michael Odhiambo, came from the green and ecological category. Michael is the head of Takawiri, a community-based organization in Kisumu with 24 members. The company produces paper-based products like envelopes and gift bags from hyacinth; a weed harvested manually from the Lake Victoria.

    Planning a green economy in Kenya

    06 July 2011

    The first inter-ministerial workshop on Green Economy was held on Friday, 24 June 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya. This meeting, organized jointly by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Kenyan Ministry of Environment, aimed at initiating a national discussion about the possibilities and challenges for the creation of a green economy.
