17th Regional Seminar for Labour Based Practitioners

The 17th Seminar of Labour-Based Practitioners was organized by the Government of Ethiopia in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) on November 13 to 17, 2017 in Addis Ababa. The theme of the seminar was "Delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The Employment–intensive Investment Approach”. The Seminar brought together 490 participants including policy makers, programme directors and practitioners from 27 countries across the world.

The renewable power of green skills for women in Zambia

For the women in the Kalulushi compound in the Copperbelt Province, building their own houses with green technologies wasn't enough. Like most people in Zambia's rural areas, they are off the grid. Without electricity, families must either spend hours in the dark or use dangerous, expensive alternatives such as kerosene, candles and charcoal. As part of the Zambia Green Jobs Programme, Emmery Matongo, Georgina Kunda and a few others were trained in solar panel assembly and installation. Not only this changed the daily lives of all villagers, it also opened new livelihood prospects for women. (Closed Captions available)

Kenya: Green jobs creation through eco manyattas

The adverse effects of deforestation that occurs in the building and construction of pastoralist homes in Kenya has direct impacts on the health and environment of these communities. Arid climate conditions and extreme weather events only exacerbate the problems of local development. The Eco Manyatta project enhances the living standards of these pastoral communities through green jobs creation in the construction of eco-friendly manyattas.

ILO Head: We need to link growth and social development to generate more and better jobs

Zambia's president Sata has stressed the need for the ILO and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security to work together and develop practical strategies for employment creation for the country. With that, ILO's Director-General, Guy Ryder, was on a visit to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region to launch a Green Jobs project which would see up to 5,000 new jobs created.
