Malawi’s Ministry of Labour pledges to accelerate efforts for the eradication of child labour

The Deputy Minister of Labour, Malawi, Honourable Vera Kamtukule has joined the African Union and its Member States, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and other stakeholders in adding her voice in pursuit of the global target to eliminate child labour in all its forms by 2025.

Taking forward Alliance 8.7 in sub-Saharan Africa

“In order to advance Alliance 8.7, we can no longer do business as usual”, said ILO Regional Director for Africa, Aeneas Chuma, at the opening of a two-day regional consultation on child labour and forced labour in sub-Saharan Africa. The conference aims to agree on concrete continental actions in preparation for the IV Global Conference on the Sustained Eradication of Child Labour (November 2017, Argentina).

Forced labour is a crime that requires severe punishment. But clear guidance is needed, to determine the often thin dividing line between labour exploitation and forced labour. Zambia is one of the African countries to have taken steps both to understand the problems through research and to instigate measures to combat them. The case illustrates some of the dilemmas.

The four minute ‘bounce-to-the-beat’ hip hop track, sung in English interspersed with three local Zambian languages, warns young people of the illegal trade in human beings and of how traffickers lure their victims with false promises of a ‘better life’.
