Report Launch

Launch of the Report Employment Protection Legislation Indicators

This event will present the quantification methodology for the ILO EPLex legal data, as well as the results of data coding for 95 countries, over 2009-2013.

Employment protection and promotion of employment security are essential aspects of the right to work. ILO GOVERNANCE and WORKQUALITY departments co-led a research programme designed to record and measure employment protection legislation (EPL) throughout the world, as well as develop a nuanced understanding of its impact on labour markets and economic development. This research resulted in the creation of the ILO EPLex legal database, and of accompanying quantitative indicators, aimed at rendering the EPLex database more accessible for comparative analysis and use by practitioners and researchers in a variety of disciplines. The methodology for these indicators has been jointly developed by ILO economists and lawyers, under the guidance of a Scientific Board, composed of representatives of academia and OECD.

Purpose of the event: present the quantification methodology for the ILO EPLex legal data, as well as the results of data coding for 95 countries, over 2009-2013.

Targeted audience: ILO staff, constituents and partner institutions interested in debates on labour market regulations.
