Discussing the process followed in developing the Social and Solidarity Economy policy in South Africa

On the 23rd March, the ILO, together with partners the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic), Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and Government of Flanders, launched a report benchmarking the process followed in developing the social and solidarity economy policy, against international best practice.

The results of a South African study conducted during consultations for the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) Policy process, was launched by the ILO on the 28th March 2022 together with the South African government’s Department of Trade Industry and Competition, the Industrial Development Corporation and the Government of Flanders.

Benchmarking the social and solidarity economy policy process in South Africa against international good practice

The development of a social and solidarity economy (SSE) policy in South Africa was initiated in 2017, with the signing of an Memorandum of Understanding between the ILO, the then Economic Development Department (now Department of Trade Industry and Competition), and the Government of Flanders.

South African government goes live with its website on the Social and Solidarity Economy Policy process
