The ICA Cooperative Research Conference took place on November 28-30 2021 in Seoul as a run up to the World Cooperative Congress. It attracted over 80 participants in Seoul, with over 150 presenters contributing on-site and online.

Mr. Dong Il Choi, Technical Specialist in ILO’s Cooperatives Unit presented the initiative on Implementing Guidelines concerning Statistics of Cooperatives at a panel session “Statistics on the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE): Cooperative and SSE Identity.” Mr. Choi noted that the initiative was part of the Strengthening SSE Knowledge Base project supported by the government of the Republic of Korea.

He informed the participants that the initiative would assess whether the Guidelines fit the realities in five countries (Costa Rica, Italy, Republic of Korea, Tanzania and Turkey) and make recommendations on the Guidelines. He underlined that the main findings from the five countries would be presented at the 21st ICLS in October 2023, and a cooperative statistics manual is expected to be developed, presented, and discussed for adoption at the 22nd ICLS in 2028.

He concluded by noting that the ILO COOP is coordinating with relevant ILO field offices to select national consultants and establish national advisory committee in each of the target countries.

Other panellists in the session included Marie J. Bouchard (University of Quebec, CIRIEC), Jérôme Schoenmaeckers (CIRIEC), and Rafael Chaves (University of Valencia).
