Summary report: Cooperatives’ competitiveness potential for trade in SADC countries

The objectives of the research are to determine what opportunities exist for agricultural cooperatives to export, with what products, and to which markets from which SADC countries. The external constraints to increasing cooperative share of export markets and the ability to be competitive in the SADC, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and EU markets have been identified as critical considerations in prioritizing the products, markets and countries.

Use of statistics on cooperatives in national policy making

This report on the “Use of statistics on cooperatives in national policy making”, prepared by Dr. Johnston Birchall, is the latest addition to the work in advancing understanding on statistics on cooperatives and their use in national policy documents and processes. The report focuses on the user perspective, looking to the ways in which these statistics on cooperatives are used in the eight countries studied. It provides an unprecedented view on the different ways in which statistics on cooperatives can be used at the country level by different types of users. It also puts forward a set of recommendations to international organizations such as the ILO to further increase their engagement with their constituents and partners at the national level.

Countries in Focus on Statistics of Cooperatives is a series produced by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC) as part of a larger initiative to increase understanding of the ways in which countries around the world are producing and using statistics on cooperatives. Currently reliable and comparable statistics on cooperatives are missing in most countries of the world. These statistics are essential to measure the impact of cooperatives on their members and the economy as a whole.

The ILO/United Nations Development Assistance Plan (UNDAP) 2013 annual report

The report categorizes interventions in three levels – macro, meso and micro levels. At the macro-level, on interventions aiming at policy making, knowledge sharing and advocacy; at meso level, where most of the ILO interventions during 2012/13 financial year were concentrated, on a number of institutional strengthening and individual capacity building interventions. ILO’s contribution in the UNDAP has also focused on direct action with beneficiaries. At micro-level interventions the report covers voices from the beneficiaries themselves as they describe the result of such direct actions.
