Uses of cooperatives and other SSE organizations reflected at the 2018 edition of the ITC-ILO Academy on the transition to the formal economy

ILO COOP joined the third edition of the academy on the transition to formal economy that took place in ILO’s International Training Center (ITC) between 12-23 November in Turin. The academy, that brought together over 100 participants from 40 countries aimed to enhance the capacity to formulate, implement and/or evaluate formalization policies through effective diagnostic analysis, better understanding of concepts and approaches for measuring informality, and its drivers and impacts on the world of work.

ILO COOP Manager, Simel Esim participated in the session on “Organising workers and employers in the informal economy” where six different scenarios were discussed by groups working in English, Spanish and French reflecting on the uses of the cooperative and other social and solidarity economy enterprises and organisations by informal workers and enterprises. The discussions focused on how employers’ and workers’ organizations can better use cooperatives and other social and solidarity economy enterprises and organisations for outreach to workers and enterprises in the informal economy.
