  1. Waste pickers’ cooperatives and social and solidarity economy organizations

    Waste pickers make significant contributions to public health, sanitation, and the environment by promoting resource circulation and reducing the amount of landfill. However, they are often not legally recognized as workers and suffer from poor working conditions and lack of social protection. This brief highlights the role of waste pickers' cooperatives and other social and solidarity economy organizations (SSEOs) in integrating and formalizing the work of waste pickers in the recycling value chain and improving their working conditions.

  2. ILO participates and contributes to the General Assembly and the Americas Summit of the International Cooperative Alliance

    ILO’s Enterprises Department Director Vic Van Vuuren participated in the General Assembly of the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) held in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Sunday, 21 October 2018. The ILO also contributed a video message to the Summit of the Cooperatives of the Americas.

    The Director ILO Office for the UN Director presented the relevance of cooperatives in promoting decent work and sustainable development at an observance of the 2018 International Day of Cooperatives held at UN Headquarters in New York.
