    The ILO is piloting an initiative to test the impact of modern greenhouses on productivity and working conditions on selected farms in Lebanon, which have been affected by the financial and economic crisis in the country.

    This ILO PROSPECTS report summarizes results of a recently conducted baseline survey of horticulture farmers, workers and wholesalers in Lebanon’s Akkar and Baalbeck-Hermel regions. It serves as a baseline for ILO’s Approach to Inclusive Market Systems (AIMS) component that seeks to unlock opportunities for decent job opportunities in Lebanon’s horticulture sector.

    The collaboration will support small-scale famers to meet their basic agricultural needs, contributing to safeguarding jobs and promoting decent employment for Lebanese host community members and Syrian refugees employed in the agricultural sector.

    The ILO has trained over 650 women and men on its My First Business entrepreneurship training programme, aimed at promoting livelihoods and decent job creation in the agriculture and agro-food sectors.

    In order to create decent job opportunities for both Lebanese host communities and forcibly displaced Syrians, the ILO deployed its Approach to Inclusive Market Systems (AIMS) to look at ways to develop the Lebanese greenhouse horticulture sector.

    This research examines why Lebanon’s cooperative movement’s ability to act as a driver of development and growth in the agricultural and agro-food sectors has been limited, what are the challenges and obstacles hindering cooperatives’ growth and expansion and what are the needed reforms and actions to allow the Lebanese cooperative sector to growth and succeed.

  10. Norway funds new ILO project to combat child labour in Lebanon

    A new Norwegian-funded ILO project will work to withdraw hundreds of Lebanese and Syrian children from hazardous working conditions and protect thousands of others from engaging in especially the worst forms of child labour.
