Corporate Social Responsibility – “Promote Disability Inclusion, Expand Businesses”

Promoting job opportunities for People with Disabilities is not only the key for people with disability to participate in the community but also contribute to businesses to expand.

HOI AN, QUANG NAM (ILO News) – Promoting job opportunities for People with Disabilities is not only the key for people with disability to participate in the community but also contribute to businesses to expand. This is the topic of a special event organized by VCCI, International Labour Organisation (ILO) in collaboration with Hoi An People’s Committee on 30th November 2013 in celebration of International Day for People with Disabilities.

“CSR: Promoting Disability Inclusion, Expand Business” with 2 main topics: “Awareness” and “Partnership” is the first event in the series that ILO will organize to promote business for new perspectives to change attitudes, build infrastructure, use products made by people with disabilities as well as promoting employment for persons with disabilities.

“ILO’s innovation is not only beneficial to persons with disabilities but also to our community and making positive changes to businesses development and corporate culture,” Dr Gyorgy Sziraczki, ILO Viet Nam Country Director shared his view. “Creating employment opportunities for persons with disabilities and promoting disability inclusion is corporate social responsibility of companies.”

ILO estimated that Viet Nam loses about 3 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product as the result of the exclusion of persons with disabilities from the labour market. Disabled persons can and desire to become productive members of society but most of them are facing barriers when accessing to vocational trainings, employment as well as participating equally in all aspect of Vietnamese society. Vietnam has realized the necessity to break all barriers and create more accessible working environments, provide diverse and accessible information and change wrong perceptions of persons with disabilities.

“Blue Ribbon Employer’s Council was established in 2007 which aims at gather national effort to support PWD.” Mr. Phung Quang Huy, Director of Bureau of Employment of VCCI, said, “There are many businesses which have realized the business case of hiring employees with disabilities.” There are 195 members in BREC since establishment and have created 2,000 jobs for PWD.
Participating in this dynamic event, many companies in the hospitality industry including major hotels, restaurants, and groups of people with disabilities in Quang Nam and Danang city will participate in a forum and a talk show with panellists who are activities and businesses hiring employees with disabilities.

Tourism sector in Hoi An is a key industry together with promoting slogan “Hoi An – a safe and friendly destination” has been and will continue to promote disability inclusion so that disabled people can work and participate equally in society.

There are about 150 businesses, 5000 business households and 11,000 people working in the tourism sector in Hoi An City. At the Forum, Mr Truong Van Bay, Vice Chairman of Hoi An People’s Committee stated that “person with disabilities working in tourism not only contribute to society development but also they can promote for accessible and friendly tourism, especially in our heritage and cultural city.”
