Nairobi, 19 July 2012 (ACTRAV INFO)-Domestic workers in Kenya organized a procession in several streets of Nairobi to ask the Parliament for the ratification of Convention 189 in their country. The main aim of the procession was to acknowledge the first anniversary since the adoption of the Convention at the International Labour Conference 2011.

The workers presented a petition to parliament justifying the immediate ratification of the Convention in Kenya. A petition and memorandum had been prepared by domestic workers for presentation to Parliament. The memorandum explained how the provisions of C189 will fit into the Kenyan agenda of Decent Work for all. The main objective was to convince the law makers that there is no other document with more applicable

Led by the Secretary General of KUDHEIHA Workers, Mr. Albert Njeru, together with union officials and staff, a group of 100 domestic workers chatted, and danced, and sang songs on the provisions of the Convention. The participants shared with the public pamphlets and various literatures on domestic workers’ rights with the public.

The march was one of the actions decided at a workshop on the ’12 by 12’ campaign - organized a few weeks before by International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) in cooperation with International Domestic Workers Network (IDWN).

Similar actions are in the pipeline for the days ahead.
