    Amid growing concerns over the impact of the economic downturn, the International Labour Office (ILO) warned in a new study that efforts to eliminate the worst forms of child labour are slowing down and called for a “re-energized” global campaign to end the practice.

    The State of Child Labour Today

    In 2006, the ILO’s second Global Report on Child Labour showed that significant progress was being made in the fight against child labour . Encouraged by the positive trend, the ILO established a visionary target – to eliminate child labour in its worst forms by 2016. Four years on, the third Global Report paints a different picture: child labour continues to decline, albeit at a slower pace. The report warns that if countries carry on with business as usual the 2016 target will not be met. ILO Online spoke to Constance Thomas, Director of the ILO International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC), about the state of child labour today.

    The global financial and economic crisis has brought with it significant employment and social challenges, particularly for migrant workers from developing countries. As a new ILO study on North and West Africa shows, the latter tend to be disproportionately affected by job losses in destination countries, with the flow of remittances to their countries of origin suffering a major decline. This has raised questions about the extent to which migration can contribute to development in countries of origin. ILO Online spoke with Steven Tobin, co-author of the study, about how best to leverage migration as a development factor.

    The ILO and the Salvadoran Government team up to support micro and small enterprises

    The Salvadoran ministry of Public Works (MOP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) will launch a joint project that is expected to generate over half a million direct and indirect jobs for micro and small enterprises carrying out road maintenance works around the country.
