    Efficient growth, employment and Decent Work in Africa: Time for a new vision

    According to a 2010 report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Africa faces the huge challenge of creating 100 million productive jobs by 2015 in order to reduce the number of working poor. Participants to the first special debate of the ILO’s African Regional Meeting on efficient growth, employment and decent work in Africa called for new ways of thinking in order to realize an inclusive job-rich growth in Africa.

    ILO African Regional Meeting to accelerate the implementation pace of the Decent Work Agenda in the continent

    African leaders, labour ministers, social partners, experts and development partners from 54 countries will discuss ways to accelerate the implementation of the Decent Work Agenda for Africa 2007-15 and respond efficiently to a jobless economic recovery, at a meeting of the International Labour Organization (ILO) which opens here on 11 October.

    Building a social protection floor in Mozambique

    Mozambique is a low-income country with high levels of poverty, informal and rural labour. Seriously affected by HIV and AIDS and exposed to climatic shocks and crises such as floods and droughts, the country’s institutions only have a limited capacity to deal with such shocks and offer social protection for the poor and vulnerable population. To address these challenges, an ILO technical cooperation project financed by Portugal works, together with other UN Agencies, to improve public policies and strengthen institutional capacity for the extension of social protection in Mozambique and other Portuguese-speaking African countries.

    Decent work for Africa’s Youth

    Africa has the youngest population in the world: Young women and men represent the continent’s best hope for getting on a sustainable development path. However, youth unemployment rates are double adult unemployment rates for Africa as a whole – for North Africa they are even four times higher. Faced with these and other major challenges, the Republic of South Africa is one of the 27 African ILO Member States that are implementing Decent Work Country Programmes (DWCPs) aimed at promoting decent work as a key component of their national development.     In a joint statement issued ahead of the next G20 Summit in Cannes on 3-4 November, the Federal Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, and the heads of five international agencies, including ILO Director-General Juan Somavia, have called for increased international efforts to restore confidence to the world economy and carry out the structural policies needed to move towards a path of strong, sustainable and balanced growth.

    Inequities in health care access in the European region

    The objective of providing universal health coverage is high on the agenda of countries in the broader European region, yet vulnerable groups often do not have full access to health services, according to Dr. Xenia Scheil-Adlung, Health Policy Coordinator at the ILO’s Social Security Department. ILO Online spoke to Dr. Scheil-Adlung, who has published a study looking at the situation in the region, which includes the European Union, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Central and Eastern Europe.
