ILO TV interviews Dorothea Schmidt, a Senior ILO Employment Specialist based in Cairo, about rising unemployment across North Africa and the impact it is having in particular on young people and women. Based on findings from the ILO's Global Employment Trends 2012 report, she also discusses the lack of productive growth in North Africa and the need for further development of labour market institutions such as public employment services. Despite short-term negative effects on North African economies, Ms. Schmidt describes the ILO's hope that the Arab Spring of 2011 will have a positive impact on labour markets in the long-term.

Which is best for the economy: employment stability or employment flexibility?

A recent article in the ILO's International Labour Review analyzes the relationship between employment stability and productivity in six major sectors in 13 European countries. According to the authors, both, extensive and short job tenure can produce adverse affects on productivity. They propose a policy of "protected mobility" on the labour market, together with active labour market policies seeking to combine both flexibility and security. ILO online spoke with Peter Auer, co-author of the article.

Employment Services Centres in Afghanistan In Afghanistan, "Men who work, have no time to make war"

An estimated 30 per cent of the Afghan work force is unemployed. In addition, approximately 100,000 ex-combatants are about to enter the labour market and hundreds of thousands of refugees are returning home. Though a vast majority (70-80 per cent) of them will return to their villages and find a livelihood in the agricultural sector, a considerable number will remain in urban areas and seek employment there, many without formal education and training. In response to the need for labour market services, the ILO in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs is establishing Employment Services Centres in Afghanistan.
