    Senior Programme Officer in Turkey, Nejat Kocabay, explains how four ILO projects are helping to eliminate the worst forms of child labour in seasonal agriculture in Turkey, including hazelnut harvesting. The projects, targeting seasonal agricultural workers, are being implemented in collaboration with the EU, Dutch and Turkish governments, Ferrero and CAOBISCO – The Association of Chocolate, Biscuit and Confectionery Industries of Europe.

    ILO Turkey’s report reveals home-based work is primarily shaped by gender roles

    A report by the ILO Office for Turkey on home-based work – the oldest form of work that has become even more widespread in the times of COVID-19 pandemic – reveals the gender-based dimensions of home-based work. “Home bounded – Global outreach: Home-based workers in Turkey”, establishes that home-based work, regardless of workers’ socio-economic status, is a form of work without social security or social protection.

    Syrian refugee, Muhammed Najjar, arrived in Turkey with his family, not knowing the language or having the means to earn an income. After taking part in the ILO’s Workplace Adaptation programme, not only does he have a job, he’s also been able to integrate into the Turkish community which is now his home.

    Boshra Shaal is one of thousands of Syrian refugees in Turkey who have taken part in vocational training and Turkish language courses run by the ILO, in cooperation with local partners. The training has helped her realise her dream of becoming a chef.

    The ILO and Germany’s Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development have signed a comprehensive memorandum of understanding which seeks to support job creation in response to the refugee crisis and forced displacement in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey.

    Occupational Safety and Health

    ILO Conventions on Safety and Health in Construction and Mining enter into force for Turkey

    As part of the efforts to improve safety and health in the hazardous sectors of mining and construction, the Government is now bound to apply the Safety and Health in Construction Convention, 1988 (No. 167) and the Safety and Health in Mining Convention, 1995 (No. 176). The value added of these ILO Conventions include requirements to develop a coherent national policy on safety and health in mining, and to articulate more clearly and implement more effectively the rights and duties of employers and workers and their representatives in both these sectors.
