Solomon Islands: Cash for work helps natural disaster recovery

Climate change directly affects lives around the world, especially as extreme weather events become more common. In the Solomon Islands, villages were washed away when heavy torrential rains, caused two rivers to burst their banks. The ILO's Cash for Work program helps the government, and workers from those communities restore their villages and livelihoods.

In February 2010, at Port Vila, Vanuatu, Labour Ministers, Senior Labour officials and representatives of worker and employer organizations from all eight countries – Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu – as well as Australia and New Zealand – took part in the first high-level gathering of its kind. After two days of rich debate a tripartite accord was adopted – The Port Vila Statement on Decent Work and the Pacific Action Plan for Decent Work. ILO Online spoke to Ms. Sachiko Yamamoto, the ILO’s Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific about the accord and development plans in the Pacific.

Asian Employment Forum: Youth employment: “We are not the problem, we are the solution”

According to the latest figures Asia’s 378 million-strong youth labour force accounts for more than one in five of the region’s total labour force and 58 per cent of the global youth labour force. Although the proportion of young people in the workforce is projected to decline by 2015, a new report prepared for the ILO’s Asian Employment Forum (to be held in Beijing on 13-15 August) says that for many countries in South East Asia and the Pacific, the youth employment challenge remains huge.
