ILO to host UN Secretary-General for the ILO Centenary

GENEVA (ILO News) – On Wednesday 8 May, the International Labour Organization will welcome UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Swiss authorities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ILO.

The creation of the ILO and of the League of Nations marked the beginning of multilateralism in Geneva.

ILO Director-General Guy Ryder, UN SG Guterres and the Swiss authorities will participate in a commemorative tree-planting ceremony in the ‘Allée du Centenaire’ and the unveiling of a ceremonial plaque outside Door 1 of the ILO building, on the west terrace. They will also make short speeches.

The Swiss authorities will be represented by the Federal Councillor of the Swiss Confederation, Ignazio Cassis; the President of the State Council of the Republic and Canton of Geneva, Antonio Hodgers, and the Mayor of Geneva, Sami Kanaan.

Members of the UN’s Chief Executives' Board for Coordination (CEB) will also be present. The CEB brings together the executive heads of the organizations of the United Nations System.

The event will begin at about 18.30 and will be followed by a private ceremony inside the ILO building. Media who are interested in taking photos and video of the outdoor ceremony should contact the ILO Department of Communication in advance and arrive at Door 1 (R3–South) at the ILO by 18.00 on Wednesday 8 May. No time for media questions is foreseen in the agenda.
