GENEVA (ILO News) – The International Labour Organization (ILO) is to establish a high-level Global Commission on the Future of Work. The names of Commission members will be announced during an event at ILO headquarters in Geneva on 21 August.

The ceremony will be attended by two serving heads of state or government co-chairing the Commission: Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, President of Mauritius, and Stefan Löfven, Prime Minister of Sweden.

The Commission will bring together some 20 experts from all over the world. It is being set up under the ILO’s Future of Work Centenary Initiative launched by ILO Director-General Guy Ryder in 2013. The experts will produce an independent report that will be submitted to the Centenary Conference of the ILO in 2019.

The global body is expected to address the many critical issues of our time and of the future that are rooted in the world of work. It will tackle the fundamental question of how a rapidly transforming world of work should be organized so that it responds to the values of social justice.

Journalists are invited to attend the worldwide launch that will take place on Monday, 21 August at ILO headquarters (Room II) from 15:00 to 15:30. A stake-out with the two co-chairs and ILO Director-General Guy Ryder is planned just before the official ceremony at 14:40 in front of room 2 at the ILO Journalists interested in covering this high-level event - including those accredited with UNOG - should contact ILO Spokesperson Hans von Rohland (rohland@ilo.org, + 41 79 593 1321) before the event so that we can facilitate their access to the ILO building.
