International Labour Conference 2-18 June 1998

GENEVA (ILO News) ­ The 86 th Session of the International Labour Conference will open on Tuesday, 2 June at the United Nations Assembly Hall in Geneva and remain in session until Thursday, 18 June.

GENEVA (ILO News) ­ The 86 th Session of the International Labour Conference will open on Tuesday, 2 June at the United Nations Assembly Hall in Geneva and remain in session until Thursday, 18 June.

A Press Release providing full details of the Conference Agenda will be distributed on Friday 29, May. The telephone and fax numbers of the ILO Presse team at the Palais des Nations as of Monday 1 June are printed on the overleaf. All Conference Documents will be available on that afternoon.

The opening plenary session in the Assembly Hall of the UN Palais des Nations in Geneva will elect the Conference President. Also that day, the ILC will be the final destination for a "Global March Against Child Labour" which will see hundreds of young people and activists converging on the Organisation's headquarters and the Conference venue to demonstrate their opposition to child labour.

Visiting journalists are requested to obtain accreditation from the ILO Presse service in the Palais des Nations as of 1 June in Room A-563 above the Assembly Hall. Journalists already holding accreditation from the UN Information Service at Geneva require no further accreditation.

The Conference proceedings are recorded and video/radio feeds are available for international broadcasts. Photographers and camera crews have access to the Plenary Hall. Journalists requiring video/audio material should contact Mr. Miguel Schapira at the ILO Presse office.

The guest of honour at this year's Conference will be His Excellency Rafael Caldera, President of the Republic of Venezuela, who will address a special plenary sitting in the Assembly Hall on 9 June at 10:00, followed by a press conference. Another special guest, Mrs. Mary Robinson, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, will address delegates in the Assembly Hall on 10 June at 10:00.

The schedule of events for the Global March on 2 June is as follows:

  • 9:30 ­ Marchers (approximately 500) assemble at the Place des Nations in Geneva and march to ILO headquarters along the via Avenue Appia
  • 10:15 ­ Welcome of the Global Marchers to the ILO by ILO Director-General Michel Hansenne followed by speeches and refreshments
  • 11:15 ­ Departure of the Global March for the Palais des Nations, via Avenue Appia, arrival at Pregny Gate at approximately 11:45
  • 12:00 ­ 150 Marchers enter the Plenary Hall (after the closing of the opening session of the ILC)

Statements by Mr. Kailash Satyarthi, Coordinator of Global March, the President of the 86 th ILC and Mr. Hansenne, in the presence of Conference delegates.

  • 12:30 ­ The remaining 350 Marchers enter the Plenary Hall for an information session on ILO policy and programmes on child labour
  • 13:00 ­ Press Conference with the ILO Director-General, Mr. Satyarthi and the President of the Conference

On 3 June:

  • 13:15 ­ Roundtable discussion with Conference delegates and Global Marchers in Room XX, Palais des Nations: Chairman, Mr. Ali Taqi, ILO Assistant Director General; keynote speaker, Mr. Norbert Blüm, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Germany
