    The International Labour Organization's campaign to promote gender equality highlights its contributions to advancing gender equality in the world of work and to raising awareness on the need to overcome existing barriers for women and men as a main driver for sustainable development. With the twelve themes of the campaign, key decent work issues are reinforced through a gender lens, demonstrating how various issues may affect women and men differently in their access to rights, employment, social protection and social dialogue.

    ILO Director-General Juan Somavia opening remarks to the ILC

    A six to eight year employment and social protection crisis may ensue if measures are not urgently taken now to avert it, according to ILO Director-General Juan Somavia in his opening remarks to the 98th International Labour Conference. He called on delegates to adopt a "Global Jobs Pact" to remedy a lag in employment recovery.

    Since the influenza A(H1N1) outbreak has been announced 53 countries have officially reported 1reported 15,510 cases of human infection including 99 deaths (as of 06:00 GMT, 29 May 2009). The speed with which the outbreak has spread and the risk of a pandemic certainly merit the implementation of all measures necessary to protect the health of the world’s population.
