Journalists have a key role to play in the collective effort to eliminate child labour

Through the Accel Africa Reporting on child labour in Africa course, learners are introduced to a number of different issues, including international labour standards, ethical reporting of child-related information, or collecting testimonies from vulnerable sources of information. They also learn about the relevant context of child labour in agricultural supply chains, such as in the tobacco, cotton or cocoa industries.

Every year, thousands of young women from Nepal leave their country to work abroad. But many who make the decision don't have the basic skills needed for their new jobs overseas. And very few know how they may be at risk for abuse and exploitation. The ILO-DFID "Work in Freedom" program offers vocational and skills training for Nepalese women, helping them to make a more informed choice about working abroad. The ILO's Director-General, Guy Ryder, presented a new publication on the recent achievements of the Organization's development cooperation, titled 'The ILO at Work: Development Results 2012-2013'. “This report is published at a time of major change in international development corporation, greater coherence between UN agencies and other development actors is being promoted, and has resulted in new ways of working and greater policy making in a one UN framework”, said Ryder during his presentation.

Improving Safety and Health at Work through a Decent Work Agenda

The equivalent of four plane crashes each and every day. This is how many people go out to work each day and don't return home because they die in a workplace accident. Thousands more die of work-related diseases. But these accidents and illnesses are preventable. Coordinated action at national and enterprise level is improving workplace safety and health, as well as directly benefiting business productivity, cost-saving and competitiveness. The EU and the ILO's programme on Safety and Health at Work and the environment SafeWork have engaged in a joint project to improve safety and health at work in five countries across three regions of the world: Honduras, Malawi, The Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and Zambia. The successes reached in these countries can be replicated around the world, leading to safe and healthy, decent workplaces for all.

Myanmar needs democracy-friendly development growth, says Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi called for international aid and investment to promote economic progress in Myanmar and in particular focussed attention on the problem of youth unemployment. Highlighting the potential of her country both in terms of its natural and human resources, she noted, "it is not so much joblessness as hopelessness that threatens our future. The Nobel laureate made her landmark address to a packed Assembly Hall at the 101st session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

Myanmar welcomes lifting of restrictions on ILO technical cooperation and support announced at 2012 International Labour Conference in Geneva

Stating they are "cautiously optimistic", the member states of the International Labour Organization have agreed to lift or suspend key restrictions on the ILO's work in Myanmar. Following a vote in the ILC plenary session in Geneva, the ILO agreed to lift restrictions which excluded the Government of Myanmar from receiving ILO technical cooperation and assistance. It also suspends for one year an ILO request of its members to review their relationships with Myanmar to ensure forced labour is not being used in those relationships. Under the agreement announced at the ILC, representatives of Myanmar can also now attend most ILO meetings, symposia and seminars.

ILO and Australian government strengthen technical cooperation with US$31 million Timor-Leste project
