Digitally and financially empowered MSMEs in Uruguay – Lesson learnt from a successful collaboration with ANDE during the COVID-19 pandemic

Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are the main sources of employment worldwide. However, access to adequate financial services is a key challenge to their development. The ILO believes that financial education is one path to support MSMEs. Our collaboration with ANDE aims to strengthen the financial knowledge and capacities of entrepreneurs in Uruguay.

Over the years, considerable effort has been invested in improving the educational attainment of people worldwide, especially as part of the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals. However, the enormous progress achieved in raising levels of education, especially among women and girls, has not translated into corresponding improvements in labour market outcomes.

A boost to skills training in Bangladesh

ILO technical specialist, Ligaya Dumaoang, introduces the Skills 21 project, a joint initiative of the Government of Bangladesh and the ILO, funded by the European Union. The project seeks to increase productivity and employment opportunities by strengthening the country’s skills development system.

On World Youth Skills Day 2021, ILO Senior Youth Employment Specialist, Susana Puerto, spoke about the impact of COVID-19 on young people’s education and job prospects and the skills that are in demand by employers and a changing world of work. The ILO has published a new Global Framework on Core Skills for Life and Work in the 21st Century, which will be launched at an event for World Youth Skills Day on 15 July.
