Senior Programme Officer in Turkey, Nejat Kocabay, explains how four ILO projects are helping to eliminate the worst forms of child labour in seasonal agriculture in Turkey, including hazelnut harvesting. The projects, targeting seasonal agricultural workers, are being implemented in collaboration with the EU, Dutch and Turkish governments, Ferrero and CAOBISCO – The Association of Chocolate, Biscuit and Confectionery Industries of Europe.

Syrian refugee, Muhammed Najjar, arrived in Turkey with his family, not knowing the language or having the means to earn an income. After taking part in the ILO’s Workplace Adaptation programme, not only does he have a job, he’s also been able to integrate into the Turkish community which is now his home.

An ILO project prioritizes education as the main instrument to eliminate child labour in the country’s seasonal agriculture. So far, more than 1,200 children have benefitted from the project.
