World Refugee Day, 20 June, is the international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events seriously disturbing public order. This goal continues to grow in importance as the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) estimates that almost 82.5 million were forcibly displaced at the end of 2020.

Journalists have a key role to play in the collective effort to eliminate child labour

Through the Accel Africa Reporting on child labour in Africa course, learners are introduced to a number of different issues, including international labour standards, ethical reporting of child-related information, or collecting testimonies from vulnerable sources of information. They also learn about the relevant context of child labour in agricultural supply chains, such as in the tobacco, cotton or cocoa industries.

Partnership for improving prospects for forcibly displaced persons and host communities

Financially supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, five Partners join efforts to develop a new paradigm in responding to forced displacement crises, particularly through the involvement of development actors. The Partnership hopes to transform the way governments and other stakeholders, including the social partners and the private sector, respond to forced displacement crises, by fostering an enabling environment for socio-economic inclusion; improving access to education and protection for vulnerable children on the move; and strengthening the resilience of host communities.

Next steps to end child labour in global supply chains

A major conference takes place this week in the Netherlands that aims to set out the next steps in ending child labour in global supply chains. ILO Director-General Guy Ryder took part in a panel discussion at the conference, which has been organized by the Dutch government in collaboration with the ILO, the Global March Against Child Labour and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.

Twenty-four million new "green jobs" could be created worldwide using environmentally sustainable practices, according to the ILO's report, “World Employment and Social Outlook 2018: Greening with Jobs”. In a global context of wage growth stagnation, increasing income inequality and a growing number of people in non-standard employment, Egypt is turning to new green technologies that protect the environment while creating productive employment.
