    For the first time in the ILO’s history, an essentially virtual Governing Body meeting is taking place. Involving members from all regions, the 340th session of the Governing Body runs from 2 – 14 November. It is the first to take place this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Finding solutions to the economic crisis requires the kind of forward thinking represented at the ILO, said the Secretary-General, which brings together employers, workers and governments. "We are going to need this kind of partnership, and this kind of practical approach, to get through this difficult time," he added.

    In his introduction of Mr. Zoellick to the Governing Body, ILO Director-General Juan Somavia cited increased cooperation between the ILO and World Bank, and noted that the ILO tripartite members could provide a "vital conduit" for extending efforts to create jobs and reduce poverty at all levels of the world of work.

    Robert B. Zoellick, President of the World Bank, discussed multilateral cooperation and policy coherence citing joint efforts between the ILO and the World Bank to meet the challenges of globalization, during an address to the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization. "We have a vision of an inclusive and sustainable globalization," said Mr. Zoellick. "What this comes down to, at the end of the day, is people. It's trying to improve the lot of people across the globe. And that requires quality jobs, it requires better social conditions, and it requires opportunities for individual development in achieving aspirations."
