A win-win for young refugees and local farmers

The third of our ILO in Action series of video stories takes us to an ILO refugee project located in Bassikounou, Mauritania. Led by ILO Chief Technical Advisor, Federico Barroeta, the project trains young people in building public infrastructure. In the locality of Lemkhaiss, they are helping to build a dam that will benefit livestock agriculture, the development of seasonal farming and will also reduce risks linked to flooding.

Solomon Islands: Cash for work helps natural disaster recovery

Climate change directly affects lives around the world, especially as extreme weather events become more common. In the Solomon Islands, villages were washed away when heavy torrential rains, caused two rivers to burst their banks. The ILO's Cash for Work program helps the government, and workers from those communities restore their villages and livelihoods.

Haiyan: Helping vulnerable communities in Coron with Decent Work

Typhoon Haiyan killed 8,000 and affected nearly 16 million people across the Philippines. And while Tacloban City sustained the most destruction, other more remote places also suffered heavy damage. Lives and livelihoods, infrastructure and services were all lost on the vacation island of Coron. A year after Haiyan, the island's people are gradually restoring some of what was lost, and at the same time, learning new skills and ways to support their families.

Building back better with decent work after Typhoon Bopha

The Philippines is the third most disaster-prone country in the world. Typhoon Bopha, named Pablo locally, was the strongest storm to hit Mindanao in two decades. Working closely with the Australian Government and those affected on the ground, the ILO supported communities to build back better with decent work, livelihoods and social protection at the forefront of recovery.
